JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) - London-listed Shanta Gold has met the final environmental hurdle in obtaining a mining licence for its Chunya gold project in Tanzania, where construction is scheduled to start before the end of the year.
The company has been granting an environmental-impact assessment certificate, and chairperson Walton Imrie said on Thursday that it was confident that a mining licence would follow "shortly".
The certificate would be provided to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, which would process the final approval of the mining licence application.
Shanta recently announced the completion of the feasibility study on the $23-million project, the decision to proceed with mine development and the commissioning of detailed design of the mine.
The Chunya project, situated in the Mbeya region of southern Tanzania, could start production in the fourth quarter of next year.
The openpit would be able to produce about 28 400 oz/y of gold over an 11-year mine life.
Shanta is also working on a feasibility study to determine the economic vialbity of mining gold at its Singida project, in central Tanzania.
